Chipata District is the capital city and administrative hub of the Eastern Province with a total population of 322,703. The district is largely urban with its main economic activity being organised agriculture consisting of both crops and livestock. Whilst it does not boast any industry, the economy of the district thrives on inter/intra-town trade. Bordering Malawi, Chipata District is a transit hub for trade between Zambia and Tanzania through Malawi.
Like the rest of the districts in the Eastern Province, Chipata has limited sports facilities and those that do exist are in a poor state due to lack of maintenance and funding. The district has a number of teams playing in FAZ leagues with around 21 teams distributed across the divisions. However, this only accounts for 600 youth in total and the rest continue to play in unstructured formats without support or training despite there being a huge amount of enthusiasm for the sport. It is due to this incredible potential for the use of football as a mechanism for growth in Chipata that it was selected by OurPitch.
Between the 21st and 25th of April 2025, OurPitch, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, hosted a FAZ-E License training course for local school teachers and coaches. The program attracted ninety-seven (97) male and eighteen (18) female participants from across the district with over 75% being from local schools.
